What Is BRICS Summit and Why Is It Important?
The BRICS Summit is a meeting where leaders of major developing economies discuss issues such as trade, investment, economic cooperation, energy, technology, global politics, and reducing dependence on Western-dominated financial systems.
BRICS originally stood for Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The group has since expanded to include additional countries.
At a BRICS Summit, leaders such as India’s Prime Minister and the presidents or heads of government of other BRICS countries meet to discuss things like:
- Increasing trade between BRICS countries
- Using local currencies instead of relying only on the US dollar
- Cooperation through the New Development Bank (NDB)
- Energy and infrastructure projects
- Global security and geopolitical issues
- Technology, AI, healthcare, agriculture, and climate cooperation.
Several major developments are attracting worldwide attention:
- India is hosting the summit. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is hosting leaders including China’s Xi Jinping, Russia’s Vladimir Putin and leaders from Iran, South Africa, Indonesia and other BRICS countries. The expanded BRICS now has 10 full members, with additional partner countries.
- India–China relations are a major story. Xi Jinping's trip is his first visit to India in seven years. Modi and Xi discussed improving business links, transport connections and bilateral relations, while India stressed that peace along the disputed border remains essential.
- The Middle East conflict became a central issue. BRICS members adopted the New Delhi Declaration, calling for “maximum restraint,” diplomacy and dialogue amid escalating Middle East tensions. This was significant because both Iran and the UAE are BRICS members despite having very different strategic relationships in the region.
- Reducing dependence on Western-controlled financial systems is being discussed. BRICS finance officials are pushing for easier cross-border payments and greater interoperability between payment systems. India has also supported exploring links between BRICS countries’ central-bank digital currencies.
- There is no new “BRICS currency” yet. Discussions are focused more on local-currency payments, digital currencies and alternative payment infrastructure rather than launching a single common currency.
- AI has become a major BRICS subject. Xi proposed initiatives including a BRICS AI Open Source Zone, greater cooperation on technology and a BRICS service-trade forum planned for 2027.
- BRICS wants changes to the IMF, World Bank and global institutions. Members argue that developing and emerging economies should have greater representation in international financial institutions.
- Trade restrictions and sanctions are another reason BRICS is in the news. Members criticised unilateral tariffs, sanctions and other trade restrictions, arguing that they disrupt international commerce.
